Waiʻanapanapa State Park is a 122-acre state park in Hana, on the island of Maui, in Hawaii. It is located at the end of Waiʻanapanapa Road off Hana Highway at mile marker 32, 53 miles east of Kahului, Maui.

Tide pools at the park turn red several times of a year. Scientists state that it is due to of the arrival of small shrimp, however local folklore says it’s the blood of Popoaleae, a mythical princess who was murdered in a nearby lava tube by her husband, Chief Ka’akea.

Plan your visit

  1. Bring a pair of sturdy shoes with good grip for hiking and exploring the trails around the park.
  2. Try to time your visit during low tide if you want to explore the unique sea caves, as they are only accessible at lower tides.
  3. Don’t miss out on the amazing black sand beach - it is a must-see!
  4. Pack some snacks and plenty of water, as there is no restaurant or cafe available within the park grounds.
  5. Make sure you check out all of the incredible views from Wai`anapanapa Lookout - perfect for watching sunsets at dusk!
  6. Bring insect repellent to ward off mosquitos in humid parts of Hana and around Wai`anapanapa State Park area specifically during hot weather months (April-September). 7 Be aware that there are strong ocean currents along most beaches in Hawaii so always swim with caution whenever entering waters near cliffs or rocks formations . 8 .Take advantage of local guided tours so you know what’s best when visiting this fantastic state park filled with cultural history & natural beauty!
