Added in 1 travel plan

Big Bend National Park is located in the city of Alpine, Texas and is renowned for its incredible natural beauty. This stunning park comprises vast desert plains, mountains and canyons, with the Rio Grande River weaving its way through it. Visitors can explore this spectacular landscape by foot or horseback, on a raft or kayak down the river, or by jeep on one of many off-road trails. Popular attractions within Big Bend include Santa Elena Canyon and Emory Peak. Santa Elena Canyon boasts mesmerizing views of sheer limestone cliffs that plunge into the Rio Grande while Emory Peak offers some breathtaking views from its summit at 7,825 feet above sea level.

Plan your visit

  1. Make sure to bring a hat and plenty of sun protection - the desert can reach very high temperatures!
  2. Wear good hiking shoes - there are many trails and rugged terrain to explore in the park.
  3. Avoid leaving food or drinks unattended, as it may attract wildlife into your campsite or picnic area.
  4. Stay on designated trails and do not venture off-trail without a guide or ranger permission - this will help protect fragile vegetation from being trampled on or destroyed by visitors.
  5. Bring plenty of water with you when exploring the park - dehydration is a real concern in these dry climates!
