Canyonlands National Park, located in the vibrant city of Moab, United States, is a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. The park is renowned for its dramatic desert landscape carved by the Colorado River, offering breathtaking views of canyons, mesas, and buttes. It is divided into four distinct districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze, and the rivers themselves, each with its unique geological features and ecosystem.

Visitors to Canyonlands National Park can explore the Island in the Sky, a broad and level mesa that provides panoramic views of the surrounding area. Another must-see is the Needles district, named after its colorful sandstone spires. Here, you can hike along the extensive trail system, passing by grassy meadows, alpine forests, and high desert terrain. Whether you’re into hiking, mountain biking, or simply soaking up the beauty of nature, Canyonlands National Park is a destination that promises an unforgettable experience.

Directions

You will have to visit each district of the park separately; no bridges or roads connect the districts within the park. You can use the official map for directions.

 • From US 191 north of Moab, UT 313 leads to Island in the Sky.
 • From US 191 south of Moab, UT 211 leads to The Needles.

Only unpaved roads reach The Maze (graded dirt or high-clearance, four-wheel-drive). These roads may become impassable when wet.

Plan your visit

 1. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing: While exploring the park, it is important to make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes and clothing that will withstand the rugged terrain of Canyonlands National Park.
 2. Bring plenty of water: Make sure to bring a water bottle or hydration pack as temperatures can become quite hot depending on the time of year.
 3. Plan ahead for sunrise/sunset photography: Depending on where you are in the park, plan ahead for sunrise/sunset shots by either scouting locations before or researching accordingly online to ensure you don’t miss out on any amazing photo ops!
 4. Buy an entrance pass in advance: Avoid waiting in long lines at the entrance gate by purchasing your entrance pass online beforehand so that you can get right into enjoying your visit to Canyonlands National Park without delay!
 5. Stay informed about potential hazards and wildlife: Make sure to read up about any potential hazards such as flash floods or dangerous animals such as rattlesnakes that could be found within certain sections of the park prior to arrival so you’re fully aware!
