WY-110, Devils Tower, WY 82714

Devils Tower National Monument, located in northeastern Wyoming, is a striking geologic wonder that towers over the surrounding grassland and Ponderosa pine forests. This 867-foot natural monolith, formed by molten rock cooling and hardening, is a sacred site for many Native American tribes and was the first landmark to be declared a United States National Monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Its unique, columnar structure is a sight to behold and has made it a popular destination for rock climbers from around the world.

While visiting, one can explore the 1.3-mile Tower Trail that encircles the base of the monument, offering different perspectives of the tower and opportunities to spot local wildlife. The visitor center provides insight into the cultural and natural history of the area. For a more immersive experience, the Monument’s night sky program offers a chance to gaze at the stars in one of the darkest skies in the country, unspoiled by light pollution.

Plan your visit

  1. Bring a camera and plenty of memory cards, as there will be lots of incredible photo ops!
  2. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing that is suitable for hiking around the park.
  3. Be sure to bring some water with you in order to stay hydrated during your visit.
  4. Climb the Tower if it’s open- there are extraordinary views from the top!
  5. Watch out for dangerous wildlife in the area, such as snakes, spiders, and bears- always stick to designated trails when exploring!
