Visit Artigas Department

The Artigas Department is located in the north of Uruguay, and it is home to some of the most incredible scenery in the country. This department has a diverse landscape with grassy plains, sweeping hills, and rugged mountains. There are many tourist attractions here, including San Eugenio Thermal Baths and an archeological site called Cuchilla de Montes Azules. At these sites you can relax in warm thermal waters or explore pre-Columbian ceramics from centuries ago!

To get a better understanding of this region's history, visitors should head to the Artigas Monument which was built to honor National Hero Jose Gervasio Artigas. Its tall bronze statue stands out against the lush vegetation of Parque Independencia where it's located. You can also take a tour of Fortaleza de Santa Teresa where Uruguayan troops fought off Brazilian forces during their battle for independence from Brazil in 1825-1828.
