Visit Canelones Department


Canelones Department is the second most populous of Uruguay's 19 departments, located in the south-central part of the country. It is home to a rich history and culture, charming towns and bustling cities. The capital of Canelones is Ciudad de la Costa, which boasts a lively waterfront as well as the country's main airport.

Tourists visiting Canelones should check out Colonia del Sacramento - one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites -which has been described as "the most beautiful settlement in South America". For wildlife lovers, Parque Nacional de Santa Teresa offers an incredible variety of bird species and lush vegetation.

The area was once populated by indigenous tribes such as Charruas, who were eventually defeated by Spanish settlers in 1624. Today, their legacy lives on through words like "churros" (a fried dough-based snack), which comes from a Charrua term meaning "women's breasts"!
