Visit Lavalleja Department


Lavalleja Department is located in the east central region of Uruguay, and is home to a great variety of landscapes, including hills and rocky outcrops. It's also bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the southeast coast. Lavalleja Department contains many interesting sights for tourists to visit such as historical Colonial-style towns and natural National Parks boasting unique wildlife.

The town of Minas de Corrales is an interesting spot to explore with its old streets, colonial buildings, churches and natural hot springs known as "Pui Pui". The Castle Hill in Atlantida is one of the most visited tourist spots in Lavalleja; it boasts beautiful views over the bay from atop its hilltop ruins.

An interesting fact about Lavalleja Department is that it was part of formerly Brazil until 1817 when Brazil was forced to cede this region by Portugal during negotiations between them for Brazilian independence from Portugal.
