Visit Montevideo Department

The Montevideo Department is the southernmost of Uruguay's 19 departments, located in the south-central area of the country. Its capital is Montevideo, which also serves as the national capital. The department covers an area of around 1,683 square miles and has a population of just over 1.5 million people. It borders Canelones to its east and Maldonado to its west.

Montevideo offers many attractions for visitors looking for some sun and sand on their trip to Uruguay: La Rambla runs along much of Montevideo's coastline, offering breathtaking sea views; beaches such as Pocitos Beach are perfect for swimming or sunbathing; and Parque Rodo offers a peaceful escape from city life with its lake and lush gardens.

Those interested in history will appreciate the fact that Montevideo was founded in 1724 by Bruno Mauricio de Zabala--making it one of South America's oldest cities--and served as an important port during Uruguay's struggle for independence from Brazil in 1812-1828.
