Visit Río Negro Department

The Rio Negro Department of Uruguay is situated in the north of the country, and is bordered by Brazil to the north-east and Argentina to the west. It has a beautiful landscape, with rolling hills and mountains, as well as large plains for agricultural production. The region also offers many lakes and rivers for visitors to explore. There are two main tourist attractions: El Palenque de los Cimarrones Monument, which marks the place where escaped African slaves once lived; and Yaguaron Fortress which was built by Spanish settlers in 1680 during colonial times.

The region also has an interesting historical past - it was founded in 1844 and given its current name because at that time it was full of black stones brought down from nearby mountain ranges by local rivers. Visitors can still find these black stones scattered around some parts of the department today.
