Visit Rivera Department

The Rivera Department, located in northern Uruguay, is renowned for its unique blend of cultural and natural attractions. With a history going back to the 18th century when it was a Jesuit mission settlement, it features one of the oldest historical sites in the country.

Tourists visiting Rivera Department can explore its lush tropical forests and vast rolling hills while taking in sights like the Salto del Penitente waterfall or Cerro Guayabo - the highest peak in Uruguay at 913 meters above sea level. There are also plenty of great beaches to be found here, such as Chuy beach along the Atlantic coast which offers stunning views of Brazil across the river.

History buffs will also find plenty to interest them here; during World War II American President Franklin D Roosevelt created an airbase at Carrasco International Airport near Montevideo that allowed US planes to refuel on their way to Europe. Today this airport serves as a major gateway into Uruguay and is visited by thousands each year.
