The Bukhara Region of Uzbekistan is a culturally rich area located in the western part of the country. It is home to some of the most important archaeological sites in Central Asia, including many historical monuments dating back to ancient times. Tourists visiting this region can explore the winding streets and bazaars of Bukhara city, marvel at medieval architectural treasures such as Bala Hissar fortress and Kalyan minaret, or take a day trip to the nearby ruins of Afrasiab.
One interesting historical fact about Bukhara Region is that it was once one of four major Muslim centres along with Damascus, Baghdad and Cordoba during Islamic Golden Age. In addition to its religious significance, Bukhara has been an important trading centre between East and West for centuries and even today there are numerous marketplaces where merchants from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan gather every week to sell their goods.
