Visit Penama

The Penama province of Vanuatu is a stunning destination located on the east coast. The landscape consists of lush tropical forests, mountainous peaks and pristine white beaches. There are plenty of opportunities for exploration and relaxation here, with a variety of activities such as diving and snorkeling, swimming, hiking and bird watching available.

One must-see location in the Penama region is Port Vila - the capital city. Here you'll find an abundance of shops, restaurants and markets to explore as well as many cultural attractions including the National Museum where you can learn about traditional customs from across Vanuatu's provinces. In addition to this, there are also several sacred sites that serve as important places for ceremonies for the local Ni-Vanuatu people.

Perhaps one of the most interesting historical facts about Penama is that it was once known as Banks Island - named after Admiral Joseph Banks who first visited here in 1773 while accompanying Captain James Cook on his voyage around the Pacific islands. Today this area holds a wealth of culture and history that can be explored by visitors looking to get off-the-beaten path in Vanuatu.
