Western Sahara is a sparsely populated area of Northwest Africa, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Moroccan-Algerian border. It is mostly controlled by Morocco, although it is internationally recognized as a disputed territory. The region was formerly known as Spanish Sahara and has since seen many decades of political conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front.

For visitors to Western Sahara there are several tourist attractions worth visiting including Cape Bojador - a cape located on the northern coast which was an important landmark for sailors of past centuries; and Dakhla Oasis - an oasis town surrounded by sand dunes in south western part of Western Sahara that offers unique experiences such as camel rides and stargazing.

An interesting historical fact about Western Sahara is that it was once home to a 2,000 year old Saharan rock art painting which depicted human hunters with bow and arrows pursuing animals. This artwork provided some insight into how people lived in this vast desert wilderness thousands of years ago.
