Yonghe Temple, also known as the Lama Temple, is a renowned Tibetan Buddhist temple nestled in the heart of Beijing. This architectural marvel, built in the 17th century, is a fusion of Han Chinese and Tibetan styles, making it a unique spectacle. It is one of the largest and most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the world, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling city.

Visitors to the Yonghe Temple are greeted by the Hall of Harmony and Peace, which houses three bronze statues of the Buddhas of the Three Ages. The most striking feature, however, is the 18-meter tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha, carved from a single piece of white sandalwood. This statue, recognized by the Guinness World Records, is a sight to behold and a testament to the temple’s historical and cultural significance.

Plan your visit

  1. Make sure to dress appropriately - modestly covering up shoulders and legs, as the temple is a sacred and spiritual place.

  2. Wear comfortable shoes, as there are some inclines within the temple grounds that will need to be traversed on foot.

  3. Follow the traditional customs of respect - remove footwear at certain locations within the temple; bow in prayer towards religious icons; do not take photos of monks or disrupt prayer rituals at any moment; be mindful when using your electronic devices (no calls or loud music).

  4. Do not give money to people performing rituals for blessings, unless you specifically want a blessing from them - if so, make sure they accept small donations only!

  5. Make sure to try traditional foods found around Yonghe Temple - such as sweet gingko nut cakes and various teas like jasmine tea!
