Metz is a city in the Grand Est region of northeastern France. Located on the Moselle River, it has been an important trading center since Roman times and is one of the country's major cultural centers. The main attractions in Metz include its Gothic-style Cathedral of St. Stephen, its three renowned basilicas, and the Centre Pompidou-Metz - a modern art museum with a collection including works by Chagall and Picasso. The city also offers plenty to explore outdoors, including the Place de la Republique with its 18th-century architecture and vibrant open air markets; the banks of the Moselle River lined with parks, cafes and restaurants; and Fort Malgrange - a 19th century military fortification that's now home to an interactive history museum.
