Tempio Voltiano is a neoclassical monument located in the city of Como, Italy. It was built in 1927 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Alessandro Volta, a renowned physicist and the inventor of the electric battery. The temple, nestled on the edge of Lake Como, is a stunning architectural masterpiece featuring a grand portico supported by four Corinthian columns.

Inside the Tempio Voltiano, visitors can explore a museum dedicated to Volta’s scientific contributions. The museum showcases a collection of his original instruments, letters, and personal belongings. One of the main highlights is the voltaic pile, the first electrical battery invented by Volta. The panoramic view of Lake Como from the temple is another must-see, offering a breathtaking vista of the surrounding landscape.

Plan your visit

  1. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes as the museum covers an area of two hectares and you will have lots of walking to do.

  2. Make time for lunch: the museum has a lovely terrace where you can enjoy traditional Lombard cuisine with a remarkable view on Lake Como!

  3. Take your camera: Tempio Voltiano is one of the most beautiful places in Como and its gardens are incredibly photogenic!
