Visit Yamagata Prefecture

Yamagata Prefecture is located in the Tohoku region of Japan, with a population of over 1.3 million people. Surrounded by mountains and blessed with rich nature, the prefecture is famous for its hot springs, stunning scenery and delicious local cuisine.

One of Yamagata's most popular tourist attractions is Zao Onsen. The area is known for its classic snow monsters - trees covered in snow resembling ghosts - and offers skiing as well as other winter activities such as snowshoeing and sledding. In summer visitors can enjoy beautiful mountain landscapes along with a range of outdoor activities such as rafting or camping at Jododaira Marshland.

Historically, Yamagata was part of Dewa Province, which was established during the Nara period over 1300 years ago. It later served an important role in samurai culture during the Edo period when it became home to powerful daimyo clans such as Sakai and Date families who fought each other to gain control over the province's wealth of resources.
