Visit Berea

Berea is a mountainous district in the southeast of Lesotho. It is renowned for its spectacular scenery and traditional Basotho culture. The area includes an array of wild animals, including rare birds and antelope, making it a nature lover's paradise.

A visit to Berea wouldn't be complete without stopping by Berea Mission Station, which was founded by missionaries in 1861 and has since become one of the most important historical sites in Lesotho. Visitors can take in some beautiful views as they explore this unique site.

Other attractions include Maletsunyane Falls, a magnificent 192m-high waterfall that plunges down into a deep gorge; Sehlabathebe National Park, home to diverse wildlife such as eland and baboons; and Bokong Nature Reserve, where visitors can explore the nearby mountains on foot or horseback.

An interesting fact about Berea is that it played an important role in Lesotho's struggle for independence from Britain during the Basutoland Congress of 1910-1911 which was held at Thaba Bosiu in Berea District. This marked the start of political negotiations between Basotho chiefs and the British colonial authorities resulting ultimately in Lesotho's independence on 4 October 1966.
