Visit Likoma District

Likoma District of Malawi is a small island located off the east coast of Lake Malawi in the Mozambique Channel. Located at the center of the lake, Likoma is visited by many tourists for its amazing scenery and unique culture. The district includes two large islands, Likoma Island and Chizumulu Island, both of which are great destinations for beach lovers and outdoor adventurers alike.

One popular tourist site in Likoma District is St. Peter's Cathedral on Likoma Island, a stunning example of Portuguese architecture from colonial times. The church was built in 1903 and is one of the oldest churches in Central Africa - it has been declared a national monument by UNESCO due to its historical importance. Other attractions include breathtaking sunsets over Lake Malawi and impressive views from Chizumulu Island's lighthouse.

Likoma District has an interesting past - during World War I it served as an important trading port for British forces stationed near Lake Malawi under command of Colonel Eustace Fiennes. This strategic positioning made it possible for supplies to be shipped directly to Allied forces elsewhere in Africa without having to go around Cape Town first!
