Visit Lilongwe


Lilongwe is the capital and largest city of Malawi, in southeast central Africa. It is situated along the Lilongwe River, 935 meters above sea level.

Lilongwe has several parks and a large wildlife sanctuary where tourists can observe zebras, antelopes, monkeys and other African animals. The Sanjika Palace is a popular historical site to visit; there are also several museums such as the National Museum of Malawi to explore nearby. For refreshing outdoor activities, tourists may enjoy visiting Kamuzu Dam or Mpiche Hill Forest Reserve for breathtaking views of Lake Malawi and amazing wildlife sightings.

One interesting historical fact about Lilongwe is that it was founded by British missionaries in 1907 on the banks of the Lilongwe River as an agricultural settlement called "Lingamputu" ("meeting place"). Over time it developed into a trading center for tobacco production before becoming declared capital city in 1975.
