Landmark ~ 3 hours

Mesa Arch, a natural sandstone arch perched at the edge of a cliff, is a spectacular geological feature located in Canyonlands National Park, near Moab, Utah, United States. This iconic landmark, formed by centuries of wind erosion, offers an awe-inspiring view as it perfectly frames the dramatic landscape of the Colorado Plateau and the La Sal Mountains in the distance.

Visitors to Mesa Arch are treated to a stunning sunrise view, where the sun perfectly illuminates the underside of the arch, creating an intense orange glow. The view through the arch is also breathtaking, overlooking the White Rim Road and the Colorado River canyons below. Additionally, one can enjoy the sight of Washer Woman Arch and Monster Tower, two other popular rock formations visible from the site.

Plan your visit

  1. Sunrise Viewing: One of the best times to visit Mesa Arch is at sunrise. The sun’s rays illuminate the underside of the arch, creating a spectacular view. However, this is also the most crowded time, so arrive early to secure a good spot.

  2. Hiking Gear: The trail to Mesa Arch is relatively easy and short, but it’s still important to wear appropriate hiking shoes and bring water, especially during the hot summer months. The desert environment can be harsh and unpredictable.

  3. Respect the Environment: Mesa Arch is located in a protected national park. It’s important to respect the environment by staying on the designated trails, not climbing on the arch, and not leaving any trash behind.

  4. Photography: Mesa Arch is a popular spot for photography. If you’re planning to take photos, bring a wide-angle lens to capture the entire arch and the stunning landscape in the background. Remember to be considerate of other visitors who are also trying to take photos.

  5. Weather Conditions: Check the weather forecast before your visit. The desert can be extremely hot during the day and cold at night. Also, sudden storms can occur, making the trail slippery and potentially dangerous.
