West Virginia is a state located in the Appalachian region of the United States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia. With rolling hills and breathtaking mountain views it has much to offer both tourists and locals alike. Tourists can explore one of the many historical sites and monuments scattered across the state or take advantage of its numerous outdoor activities like hiking, camping, fishing, whitewater rafting and skiing.

One popular tourist spot is Harper's Ferry National Historical Park where visitors can explore Civil War battlefields as well as enjoy stunning views of the Potomac River. Another popular destination for tourists is Blackwater Falls State Park where visitors will find majestic waterfalls surrounded by lush green forests and hiking trails perfect for exploring nature's beauty.

An interesting historical fact about West Virginia is that it was actually part of Virginia before 1863 when it declared its independence from Confederate rule during the American Civil War forming an independent union-loyal state known as West Viriginia; this makes it unique among states in America as being formed by seceding from a Confederate state rather than from Union control.
