Place of worship ~ 2 hours

The Buddha Dordenma is a 129-foot tall bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha located in the city of Thimphu, Bhutan. It is adorned with 125,000 smaller statues and can be seen from almost anywhere in the capital city. The statue, which was completed in 2015, features some impressive architecture and engineering feats such as its intricate gold-plated details and use of mandala principles to depict balance and harmony.

Visitors to Buddha Dordenma can take part in a variety of activities including spiritual pilgrimage walks around the base of the statue or taking part in meditation sessions at one of its many prayer wheels. From the interior balcony, visitors can marvel at panoramic views stretching out towards Jaw City Valley while looking down upon an 8 million kapala containing relics. Visitors should not miss out on checking out this stunning monument when visiting Thimphu for an unforgettable experience!

Plan your visit

  1. Dress respectfully for your visit: even if you’re visiting on a hot day, shorts and short sleeve shirts are not considered appropriate attire when visiting this sacred space.

  2. Be mindful of noise levels: Buddha Dordenma is a peaceful site and should be treated with reverence; therefore, avoid loud conversations or the playing of music while inside the temple grounds.

  3. Respect local customs: remove your shoes before entering any temple buildings; avoid touching religious items or statuary; don’t sit too close to images of the Buddha or other revered figures; never point your feet at monks, statues, or shrines, as this is considered impolite in Buddhism culture.

  4. Avoid taking photos inside some temples and shrines within Buddhists monasteries like Buddha Dordenma - check signage before snapping pictures so as not to offend anyone in residence at the monastery site itself (or who may be visiting).

  5. Do make sure you explore every part of this magical monument - from its large gold statue to its hidden stupas nestled among small trees!
