Visit Uusimaa

Uusimaa (Nyland) is a province located in the south of Finland. It is home to the capital city Helsinki and covers an area of about 6,735 km2. It is home to over 1.38 million people and includes 15 municipalities.

Uusimaa has much to offer tourists, from its numerous lakes and islands, to its many parks and museums. Tourists should visit Suomenlinna Sea Fortress which was built on a group of islands off the coast of Helsinki in the 18th century, or Porvoo Old Town with its cobblestone streets lined by red-brick warehouses that date back centuries.

The area has a rich history going as far back as prehistory when it was inhabited by hunter-gatherers during the Stone Age period. In 1721 it became part of Sweden until 1809 when it was ceded to Russia after which it then became part of independent Finland in 1917, this event being known as The Grand Duchy of Finland's Declaration or Uusimaa's Declaration Day celebrated annually on December 6th.
